Description: 

Early Connections/Conexiones Tempranas (EC/CT), a project of the Center for Early Relationship Support (CERS) of Jewish Family and Children’s Service (JF&CS), is designed to address traumatic stress and build resilience in children ages 0-5 while reducing disparities in mental health access among marginalized populations, particularly Latino immigrant families living in Waltham, Massachusetts and nearby communities. The project serves pregnant women and families with young children who are coping with multiple adversities including parental substance use or mental illness, domestic abuse, community violence, homelessness, separation from a primary caregiver, and/or immigration.

In collaboration with our partner, Boston University School of Social Work, EC/CT offers and evaluates services at multiple levels. For parents and young children, EC/CT provides Child-Parent Psychotherapy augmented by Circle of Security-Parenting groups to promote engagement and build interpersonal connections. The EC/CT team includes bi-lingual/bi-cultural clinicians, as well as community members hired as Mentoring Moms, to provide peer support and connect families with resources. At the community and systems level, EC/CT is building a trauma-informed network of local organizations, representing health care, early childhood education, child welfare, domestic violence services, and Early Intervention to enhance community-wide awareness and collaboration in meeting the needs of trauma-exposed and marginalized young children and families.

Description: 

The Complex Trauma Treatment Network (CTTN) is a network within the NCTSN established in 2009 to develop, adapt, and disseminate evidence-based child/family complex trauma interventions (CTI’s). The CTTN engages in three levels of activity across all ten HHS service regions: (I) enhancement of complex-trauma informed infrastructure across the care continuum; (II) CTI model dissemination, trainer-training, and adoption in residential treatment (RT), juvenile justice (JJ) and youth/family homeless shelter (HS) settings; and (III) promotion of regional sustainability of CTI’s through establishment of interagency consortia within large metropolitan regions, multistate urban corridors, and national service organizations. Building upon foundational groundwork from the past two funding cycles, CTTN is partnering with over two dozen state agencies and nonprofit foundations nationwide to conduct Learning Collaboratives embedding the ARC model as a systems and clinical intervention in RT settings and the Think Trauma Curriculum and the SPARCS treatment model in JJ settings, and to develop, pilot and refine an ARC-informed, brief SPARCS intervention for use in HS settings. The CTTN is also conducting intensive Learning Communities with the Division of Youth Services and Karidat Social Services in the Northern Mariana Islands, and with a coalition of seven governmental and nonprofit organizations led by the DHHS Behavioral Health Services Division in American Samoa, to seed complex-trauma informed infrastructure in the Pacific Island U.S. Territories. The CTTN is a collaboration of Suffolk University, The Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute, Adelphi University, Anchorage Community Mental Health Services and the University of Chicago and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.

Description: 
The STaR (Stress, Trauma, and Resilience) Program provides and oversees effective service approaches by offering high quality training and technical assistance in evidenced-based practices that support the treatment of children and their families who have experienced stress and trauma. Additionally, STaR provides trauma sensitive treatment (Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency [ARC] principles) directly to children and their families with a focus on children in military families, families involved with the child welfare and protection system and urban youth at risk of gang and community violence.

Description: 

Alliance for Inclusion and Prevention (AIP)’s Center for Trauma Care in Schools (CTCS) is a hub for training and school-based delivery of evidence-based practices (EBPs) to treat traumatic stress in children in Boston’s public schools. AIP collaborates with Boston Public Schools (BPS), Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, and community mental health providers to deliver a training program for clinicians in evidence-based approaches for treating students with traumatic stress symptoms. CTCS-trained clinicians and clinical interns screen students for trauma and provide Trauma Systems Therapy (individuals) and Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) (groups). In addition, CTCS collaborates with schools to foster trauma-sensitive school environments and with clinical training programs to develop a workforce skilled in treating trauma in schools using EBPs. The goals of CTCS are to: (1) increase access to trauma services via school-based interventions; (2) improve quality of services through provision of a continuum of evidence-based screening and treatments; and (3) foster school environments that are sensitive to traumatic stress.

CTCS Project Strands: (1) School-Based Screening for Trauma; (2) Training in School-Based, Evidence-Based Practices Addressing Trauma; (3) Provision of Evidence-Based, School-Based Services Addressing Trauma; (4) Building System Capacity. For 10 years, AIP has operated a school-based mental health partnership in a dozen Boston public schools with a focus on trauma and has developed the school-based adaptation of Trauma Systems Therapy.

The Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University

Description: 

The Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program at the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University offers clinical services to young people experiencing difficulty with fears, anxiety, shyness, and other related disorders such as depression and traumatic stress. It also offers specialty programs for preschool-aged children with disruptive behavior problems.

The program provides comprehensive evaluations and state-of-the-art cognitive-behavioral treatment for children and adolescents between the ages of three and 17. For certain child populations and disorders, the program provides behavioral parent training as well as live and interactive Internet-based services delivered directly to the homes of families struggling with difficult preschoolers.

M. Carolina Velasco-Hodgson is a bilingual clinician with over 10 years of experience. She attended psychology school in Chile, and after obtaining a Fulbright Scholarship, she completed her MSW in the US. She was a Social Work Intern at Child Witness to Violence Project and collaborates with the NCTSN Translation Review Committee since 2010 (Caring for kids, Trinka and Juan, and after disasters’ fact sheets) and also collaborates with other members of the NCTSN network (PTSD in Infancy and Early childhood interview: PIE). Carolina currently has a private practice and is a professor in two Universities in Chile. She remains involved in Network activities focusing in early childhood trauma and on product development for Spanish speaking families living in the US.

Children's Hospital Boston, Advancing Treatment and Services for Refugee Children and Adolescents

Description: 

The Boston Children's Hospital Refugee Trauma and Resilience Center works to provide national expertise in the area of Refugee Displacement and War Zone Trauma/Refugee Health and Resettlement Agencies (Refugee Trauma). The purpose of this project is to address behavioral health disparities for refugee children, adolescents, and families across the nation by developing, disseminating, and supporting strategies that enhance access, service use, and outcomes for this population. The specific goals that comprise this work include: (1) supporting the development and implementation of effective trauma interventions and approaches for refugee children; (2) developing training protocols and products to support dissemination and replication of effective interventions and approaches in communities across the nation; (3) developing and disseminating evidence-supported products in refugee trauma; (4) developing and delivering trainings across systems and providers; (5) collaborating within the network to promote understanding of the culture and special needs of refugee children and families; and (6) providing national and community leadership on child refugee trauma.

University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, U Mass Medical School Child Trauma Training Center

The University of Massachusetts Medical School Child Trauma Training Center (CTTC) will be developed by the Department of Psychiatry to improve identification of trauma, to increase trauma-sensitive care, and to increase access to evidence-based, trauma-focused treatment for at-risk and underserved children and youth aged 6–18 in central and western Massachusetts—including court-involved youth and youth in military families. During the grant period CTTC anticipates: 1) training 1,800 child-serving professionals in trauma-sensitive care; 2) reaching approximately 20,000 children/youth with trauma-informed services; and 3) providing TF-CBT to 900 children/youth. The service array for the CTTC includes 60 cities and towns in central Massachusetts (Worcester County) and 23 cities and towns in western Massachusetts (Hampden County). Additionally, the CTTC will create a centralized referral system that will include a network of agencies with documented training in evidence-based trauma treatment. Along with providing trauma-informed training, the CTTC will offer training for first responders (e.g., police) in trauma-sensitive practices, and will disseminate culturally competent trauma screening tools to pediatricians, juvenile courts, and schools.

Betsy McAlister Groves was the former director of the Child Witness to Violence Project at Boston Medical Center, and site director for Boston site of the Early Trauma Treatment Network. She is now on the faculty at Harvard's Graduate School of Education and remains involved with NCTSN activities focused on early childhood trauma, domestic violence and collaborations with pediatric professionals to increase their skills in identifying and responding to childhood trauma.

Justice Resource Institute, Complex Trauma Treatment Network

Description: 
The Complex Trauma Treatment Network (CTTN) will develop, adapt, and disseminate evidence-based practices (EBPs) for children and adolescents impacted by complex trauma. The project’s goals are to: 1) transform multicounty and state systems of care serving children and families impacted by complex trauma; 2) address gaps in complex trauma services to youth of color living in poverty and/or with urban violence; and in residential treatment centers, juvenile justice detention centers, shelters, and foster care; 3) enhance graduate-level social work education to cultivate a sustainable provider workforce across the child services continuum trained in complex trauma; 4) increase national access to EBPs for complex trauma including: Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competence (ARC), Structured Psychotherapy for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress (SPARCS), and Trauma Affect Regulation: Guide for Education and Therapy (TARGET); and 5) expand regional, national, virtual, and Web-based dissemination of products and resources from CTTN and NCTSN. The CTTN will also provide intensive training and technical assistance to transform systems of care in more than 200 community and state agencies participating in one of 18 Learning Communities; and will train more than 20,000 multidisciplinary child service providers on the impact, assessment diagnosis, and treatment of complex trauma in at least twenty states. This initiative will directly impact 100,000+ children and families nationwide.
